Mission in Oelwein

God has called Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church to be a congregation within the body of Christ in this place at this time. We are called to share our gifts to reach out to the members of this congregation and the members of this community. Even though we take our calling seriously, we respond to who God has called us to be in a way that makes the journey of faith life-giving for people of all ages. When we are inside the doors of our building, we are building and encouraging our members through Word and Sacrament ministry. When we are in the community, we are looking for ways to share God's love in many different ways.

Zion's mission statement

As people of God, called and forgiven by Jesus Christ, we understand God's mission through us, to be reaching out in love to the community, nation and world. To do this, we will share God's Word of salvation through witnessing, teaching and the sacraments, and build opportunities for growth in Christian life and service

Witnessing

Every one of God's children has been transformed through the forgiveness that comes through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Our task, as Christians, is to share how God has changed our lives with other people. We are called to invite them to get to know how God's forgiveness changes their lives, too.

teaching

We provide many different types of instruction opportunities at Zion Lutheran Church. We offer people the opportunity to see how God's Word informs their life. We also encourage them to spend time in God's Word outside of worship and church activities and to actively nurture the faith they have been given.

sacraments

We believe that faith comes by hearing and that Jesus wants all people to be in a relationship with Him. Therefore, we offer the sacrament of Baptism to infants and to people of all ages. We also offer the Sacrament of Holy Communion every week, so people can be strengthened by the body and blood of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ as often as possible.
